I am someone who gradually put on weight, despite maintaining the same level of activity.  While I ate some fatty and high sugar foods I was largely eating food I understood to be healthy.

Several years ago, away on business, my trousers were so tight I went out and bought a larger pair and a longer belt.  This should have been the time for an epiphany.  Unfortunately this didn’t happen and I headed off to the bar for beer and salted peanuts.  This was despite knowing I should be reducing my belt size rather than buying new belts.

Some time later I got leaner through changing what and how much I ate.  The lower weight has been maintained.  I can even wear the belt worn when at high school.

In writing Enjoy Losing Weight I reviewed my experience compared with the normal track record of ‘diets’ which are typically unsuccessful or only temporarily successful.  I have had no problem achieving and maintaining my goal weight.  I’m certainly not particularly strong-willed so why the difference?

More accustomed to improving organisational performance I sought the key factors necessary for success. These are presented in an easy to read format in Enjoy Losing Weight.

Why should you take the advice of someone who doesn’t have a medical background? Medical knowledge is widely available and the medical profession doesn’t have a monopoly on this information. Access to this knowledge is only one element in successful weight loss. I have personally applied the advice in Enjoy Losing Weight and lost weight. This is without attending weeekly meetings or taking pills. I have monitored my own risk factors and have reduced my triglyceride level, reduced LDL (bad) cholesterol and increased HDL (good) cholesterol through my new eating habits.

One of the benefits of losing weight is I find exercise so much easier and much more enjoyable.  I am now doing much more exercise and feeling fitter than I have for many years.  However this hasn’t changed my view that I need to manage my weight through my eating habits.  Being at a healthy weight is fantastic and I wish you all the best on your journey to good health.
